Museum SAN is a one-of-a-kind museum with indoor and outdoor exhibits that take advantage of the surrounding natural beauty. The Korea Tourism Organization named this museum in Wonju city one of the 100 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Korea. The three gardens are the most popular parts of the museum, where you should spend the most time.
The first garden, dubbed “Flower Garden,” was intended to be a field of China Pink flowers. However, it was just a dry green field because it was summer and not the blooming season.
If you walk through the park, you will come to the end of the garden and see a large red archway that leads to the water garden. This location is always crowded because it is an entrance and everyone wants to take pictures beneath it. Don’t get the touristy shot right underneath it; instead, try a different angle that not everyone has!
The red archway is an outdoor sculpture by Alexander Liberman that serves as the entrance to the water garden and the main building. It is the museum’s most recognizable piece.
Water Garden is the highlight of the museum! As part of the museum’s art, the main building houses the galleries and is surrounded by decorative pools. The surface of the water creates a captivating reflection of the surroundings, and it even makes the building appear to float.
When the air is calm, it perfectly reflects the view; when the wind blows, it does not become imperfect; it simply becomes more beautiful in a different way! The structure is also suitable for viewing the water garden from above.
You should also visit the gallery inside the main building if you have time. Not only can you enjoy paintings, but you can also enjoy paper art, retro trees, and one-of-a-kind furniture. Allow for some downtime because you may wish to follow the maze path of this building.
The Stone Garden, located on the opposite side of the main building, is the museum’s final garden. It consists of mounds inspired by ancient Korean royal tombs. The curved stroll through the stone mounds looks like a peaceful work of art. The dome is surrounded by beautiful scenery, and the vibrant sound of nature fills the space.
Finally, if you walk through the garden’s curved path, you will come across a gallery of James Turrell’s artworks, which are known for working with the beauty of light and the sense of infinite space.
